My good friends Kris Mukai and Maritsa Patrinos (and myself and another pal Arlin Ortiz) worked pretty hard to put together a Game of Thrones themed minizine in time for George R. R. Martin's New York City signing of A Dance With Dragons. I have a piece inside and also did the cover, which we printed on a risograph in 3 layers. My buddies in power trio The Revere enlisted me to do the art for their upcoming EP, Ashia. The image reflects the moment from the story where Lesedi-- half starved and driven nearly to madness by the loss of his wife (Ashia) at the hands of a group of villainous mercenaries-- hunts down his wife's murderer and slaughters him. I'm very happy with the result AND the music.

Speaking of, they have a show at Fontana's on May 5th. Friends in New York should attend!

Haven't been working enough. I should just preface every blog post with that, huh? Anyway Nicole/Erica/Laura were gracious enough to accept my art as a cover since I don't have the time to do an actual comic for their Mythology Anthology. The imagery is all from Gustave Doré's illustrations for Paradise Lost, which covers something about Lucifer being cast from heaven and etc... the things I really know very little about. There are some things I'm happy with and some things I'm not. That is all.

Otherwise I've just been working 9-5 at my sweet-ass job and slowly planning more of Half-Caste out with Gaetano. What's everyone else been up to so far this summer?

Planters Process

For some reason when thinking of a folder name for this new painting series I wrote "The Planters," so that's what I'm calling them. SHRUG.

Anyway, I actually took progress shots of this painting so far, which I usually don't do-- mostly because my camera has been very dead because I lost the charger for a while. You may enjoy them, or not. I always liked seeing things change over time, myself!

But, like I said, it's not done yet. it's 15x15 and entirely oil, including that washy stuff at the beginning. It's further along than this now. Much closer to being finished. I like looking at these shots because it's interesting being able to go back and observe certain decisions I made on the fly. Some work and some don't. Good for future reference! Also, here's what my palette looks like these days:

Mythology Anthology

Some friends of mine asked me to do a cover for their rogue anthology, so squeezed it out between some other projects. I basically don't have time for anything anymore.
Anyway, I've been getting really into doing digital sketches and then transferring them with a grid. I find I come up with a decent composition remarkably faster than when I just use a pencil and paper! First I needed a concept though, so I dicked around on the internet researching various myths and legends, but ultimately settled on the busiest and most aesthetically pleasing for me, Medusa (and her hair).

Here's what the sketch was (the blue is actually a pile of rope). I'm almost hesitant to post it because it betrays how poorly I draw things with accuracy. Oh, and the grid was overlaid onto the sketch purely for transfer purposes-- I didn't use it compositionally at all.

Also MOCCA is this weekend! (Tomorrow!) I'll be there all day Saturday (Tomorrow!) with Static Fish, Pratt's comic anthology group. A very, very favorite webcomic of mine, A Lesson is Learned but the Damage is Irreversible, probably has the most endearing combination of free form art and writing of visual storytelling I've ever read. I've been re-reading them all at work because, honestly, I'm super-bored.

Anyway, something I'd never done before is read the authors' accompanying posts underneath the comic. What kind of fan am I? There is one I found particularly interesting and is definitely worth reading if you're an artist (which is everyone who follows this blog, probably). It pertains to this comic, specifically:

Analysis of the Christmas Disaster Episode

I've been thinking and writing recently about comics as a medium. A friend of mine asked in an email about spacial organization of story in comics -- whether things like line breaks were important narrative choices. My response become an analysis of episode 18:

Absolutely... In this way comics can be compared to poetry, in which things like line breaks are always explicitly intentional. With prose, somehow we know to filter out that kind of information... we know that the placement of line breaks is just a result of the font size and margin widths. We are aware of line breaks, but whatever dramatic/aesthetic/other effect they may have is muted by our presupposition that they are not part of the art.

Anyway, the way we read comics, taking in a lot at once, things like line breaks are deeply important. But to talk of line breaks as though they were as straightforward as in prose is a mistake. Some comics are built very regularly, in lines and rows, but it's possible to get much wilder than that. Take a look the Christmas Disaster Episode. ... Although it hasn't got very obvious panel divisions anywhere, the top part of the comic is built with a certain flat organization. We see a couple women, a tree, David, and Paul -- all seemingly part of the same scene. Despite a certain degree of stylish abstraction, we can imagine that all these elements could be captured more or less as they are by a camera. One bit that doesn't fit in with photographic logic, however, is the Jessica Rabbit-like figure to the left of David. Her scale and way of blending into the figures to the left of her suggest that she is not literally, spacially behind David, but maybe a graphic representation of what he is thinking or looking at as he says "that girl is so hot! I'm going to get her number."

As we continue to read, we see some presents cavorting festively in a column down the left side of the composition. Probably feeling a little disoriented, we fall back on habit and read the next "line," where I am peering through a black space in the panel structure, presumably a window. In the next panel, but relating to me in a way that indicates he shares the same space, Paul gestures to the panel following him. This panel, besides looking generically like a 'panel,' also appears to be a window (it resembles hanging drapes). So these three panels function simultaneously as abstract design elements, as 'panels,' as time divisions (indicating three moments), and as tangible elements of the scene (windows, drapes). David and Paul share the same space. In a sense they share the same moment, but Paul's remark responds to David's action. So although they appear visually to occupy the same moment together, it is not a photographic moment; it is a moment made of several. That unit of behavior (looking through the window, Paul's pointing in the other direction, the view which drew his attention), which could be characterized as a single 'gesture,' a collection of actions which somehow compose a single motion, a gestalt of transferring attention and energy, is depicted in a way that does not drain it of mystery.

Next, we see that the city visible through the window 'spills' into a larger space below... Reading on, things become more jumbled and confused as David springs into action and disaster befalls the city. The panels, initially flat, begin to suggest a simple 3D space, then become a stair well which looks extremely flat while also inheriting a conflicting 3D feeling by aligning with the walls of the buildings behind it. The wave looms ominously above, then seems to crash below. The division between these moments is ambiguous. Again, they don't coexist as two objects in a photograph coexist. They are the "same thing" and they are two different things: a wave in two discrete moments AND a single body of water extending through a continuous space.

The flowing water carries us left, crashing against tall buildings, then right again, zig-zagging behind the stair well. Meanwhile, the packages which we began to follow vertically before now plunge into the water, almost like a reemerging sub-plot. David is depicted among them, in what could be interpreted as an alternative view of his pose in the adjacent panel (in which paul calls, "David, she's doomed"), or as a separate moment... But by the time one has become comfortable reading this kind of thing, the question of whether it is the same moment or not ceases to register. Everything blends together as a fluid experience. The figure in the column of falling presents doesn't need to exist in a literal, definable spacial relationship to anything else. The important thing is that it's expressive, it helps us feel the action. We experience the moment it its dynamic, living chaos and ambiguity. We allow media to be not a systematic/logical conquering of experience, but a compliment to it which fluidly embodies its rhythms and mysteries.

The two figures together -- David's hands on the girl's shoulders -- seizes our attention at the largest scale so far, with an impact worthy of that moment. The waves still crashing behind them, David and the red-haired girl share a moment which repeats like an echo from that first face-to-face instant. The two panels which follow are the most "panelly" thing in the comic, isolating the figures, isolating the moment, drawing focus in the way that confrontation would. The two panels, with their slanted top lines, really do seem to emanate from the pair on the left, like a signal which grows fainter with each repetition. The recurring image of the girl, hair and shoulder, her face unseen, seems decreasingly human and more graphic, and David's face literally simplifies, the blue of his shirt fragmenting. The disappointment and deflation is palpable.

David plunges into the water. The splash rises in front of the 'echo' panels, both interrupting them and existing separately. Therefore there's a certain sense of division between it and everything that came before. Unlike David's departure from the apartment, the transition is not fully depicted. We don't follow him in the same way. We don't see him leave the girl on a rooftop, leaping away from her... We're given no help with the transition. So, subtly here, there's a change in feeling. I suppose I was trying to communicate the strange detached sensation of walking away from disappointment. One's mind drifts away, one's feet begin to move for lack of any other solution. The last part of the comic exists in this sad, confused mindset. Underwater, David meets a girl in a bookstore; laughs over drinks; kisses in an empty movie theater. It's as real as anything else we've read, but it hovers around David's diving form, his lenses bright, indicating to us vision or consciousness, but isolated and haunted on a face with no other detail. The images which surround those eyes could be only their projection. The rubble of the submerged city -- and the tree which had been so festive at the beginning, now fallen without its star -- speak of ruin and death. Also, the string of lights (or whatever they are) which had been a ring at the top now hang in a thread which seems to drift in the current. Do the scenes of David and the girl exist in the present? Are they a projection of an inevitable future? Are they simply a wish, probabilistically neutral? Or does the desolation surrounding them suggest that the dream is doomed? I hope that all these thoughts can coexist, that the reader can be left with a sense of something unresolved... That sense of no resolution, of hope and fear together, is the subject of the comic.

On Storytelling and Emotional Synchronicity

Let me first say that I am absolutely in love with movies. I would gladly spend money that would otherwise be used for food on the ridiculous cost of a theater ticket because I simply love them so. And if you know me you know that I really love food. I love pictures and storytelling and all that lies between-- and I've a (brief) lifetime of loving the intricacies of musical composition and storytelling with sound. I was once trying to explain my love for film (something that often makes my eyes develop a glimmering sheen) to a class and the teacher inquired, rightly so: "Then why aren't you a film major?"

This is a heavy question.

To answer it requires me to weigh and balance the importance of entertainment versus art. Art is entertainment and vice versa, but what weighs more heavily on my mind is which means more to me personally. Or even more abstractly, how can I define something as one or the other when they are so often the same? It's purely subjective, as is a great deal of art (visual or otherwise), so describing it to an inquisitive audience may be somewhat pointless, whereas describing it to myself may be one of many grand undertakings that is invaluable to my process.

When I watch a film, I am entertained. I escape from paying my rent. I flee from looking for a job. I procrastinate doing important things and elude speaking to other human beings for a negligible amount of time. If a film cannot make me do this, then it is not a good film or is trying to make some other point I probably won't care for. I want a story. My story is mundane and terrifying to me, who doesn't want to reach the end but can't help but continue reading-- trapped in a textbook impeding sleep for a night endless prior to an impending exam. Some may laud the greater consideration required for abstract film, which makes its viewers postulate something poignant and topical, but I think a film that is able to make me leave behind the life I lead (rather than plunging me deeper into it) is far more important.

But for some reason, making film seems so removed from storytelling, to me. The more involved you become, the more cluttered your thoughts are with the technical trade and important, relevant names. It would ruin the story-- the magic. Similarly, the more I work on comics the more I loathe them-- until I find it in me to pick one up and read it, wherein I realize the euphoria of a story breaking over your life in waves; your life written in the sand just before the dark tide of story.

True storytelling comes from the viewer, who interprets the will of the artist. If your story is convoluted (and mine very often are), what does it matter that you're sharing it? If nobody understands, it will never be retold. It will never reach the collective unconscious of storytelling. It may never even transcend visual language into vocal conveyance, let alone mental comprehension. People have been harping on about the banality of the characters in James Cameron's Avatar and the rehashed story. It's nothing new to us, or anybody-- but that's what makes it that much more relevant as a story. It's being retold because people everywhere can absorb the underlying elements no matter what the bizarre context. It's a story that transcends time and context and Cameron is telling it with his own visual language.

Earlier, a friend and occasional business partner of mine sent a long email about his favorite films of the year. What makes me respect his choices and what gives his list relevance, especially, is that he not only lists the films, but defends his decisions with poignant observations he's made as a study of film, himself.

"Thirty years ago, STAR WARS accomplished a similar feat. Adjusted for inflation, AVATAR’s $560 million domestic take doesn’t come close to STAR WARS’ $1.3 billion. George Lucas famously used Joseph Campbell’s work to intentionally create a universal story combining eastern philosophy, pirates, princesses and space. In turn, Campbell was greatly influenced by Carl Jung whose ideas have since become ubiquitous in screenwriting. Cameron is obviously down with Jung, expertly using his theories to craft his movie, including archetypical characters and plot-line, our collective visual unconscious, and emotional synchronicity."

Emotional Synchronicity.

I can get behind that.

I can understand that term as a visual storyteller, especially. It is, again, something fruitless to explain to an audience, but relevant to the man who ponders it beyond reason. I am not a film maker because I cannot emotionally synchronize with the process behind film making. What I can do is dump the entirety of whatever synchronization or emotions or both into storytelling. Because I was unfortunate enough to be born at an intersection of grandmotherly artistic genetics, I am constructed mentally to tell stories not with cameras or words written or spoken, but visual meaning-making.

I can stay up all night, giddy from the excitement of figuring out the way ballpoint pen is affected by a specific brand of tape over time. I can sacrifice physical and mental health in the pursuit of chemically unhealthy layering methods. I can sit on my front stoop and literally polish a painting like a finely crafted blade until it shines like an expensive watch catching the light of a setting sun as its wearer rides the train out of the city and home to his family, where he will, at face value, watch a movie to gather his wife and children into the same room, only to emotionally escape from reality at the last second; a cheesy summer blockbuster.

          Recently it's really come to my attention that I'm not too great at rendering with paint short of some sort of trick using line work. Looking back, this probably stems from my aversion to using pencil. I always hated the way it smudged and took so long to layer to get a decent image- and I really loathed it when people would smudge their pencil intentionally to get shading. It seemed lazy compared to the way I would use mark-making to achieve my results. I know everyone has their own way of working-- I'm not holding anything against anyone here. I'm just saying I had this aversion instilled into me at a young age for various reasons.
          Now that I find myself piss-poor at rendering I realize it's probably because I avoided one of the most versatile dry-media rendering tools around: The Pencil. I've decided to take some time to become re-acquainted. I'm used to the accidental dirty smudging now, and even kind of like it for its layering properties and wealth of techniques it supplies a (much) kneaded eraser (god I hate that joke).
          I'm taking my time. I'm going to figure this out. I'll try and do a decent pencil rendering exercise every day. I will. I'm doing it. I'm starting from the ground up.

What I Did Over Summer Vacation

My first illustration of the school year, technically. We had to illustrate what we did over summer vacation in whatever way we chose. I decided to just depict a harem of characters occupying my attention for most of the summer, including TF2 team members, Smash Bros. (or Nintendo) characters, and Marvel intellectual property. The two games because I played (and play) them, never seeming to escape from their crushing grip-- and Marvel characters because I interned there. A lot went wrong while executing this. I'm certain you can see my errors. Ignore them, please.

It's india ink, white acrylic, more black ink, shellac (disastrous), and more white acrylic. 9x12 I think. Cheers.

The biggest thing you haven't seen is probably the movie poster and website I recently designed and illustrated for Gaetano Crupi's latest indie flick, A Magic Helmet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxgHnAKdbEc). I had a lot of fun working on this and I'm definitely excited for our future collaborations! I did just the image of the poster first (above) before Gaetano realized I'm capable of graphic design as well (though not exactly of designer stock), which resulted in me handling the type layout as well (below).

The site (below) is a far more complex project which I hope to see completed by whoever he's hiring for the programming. I'll let you all know when it's completed!

This is some stuff from the end of the semester up until now... and even some things from my little book, which I don't think I've ever shown you before. What a treat!
The larger pages are a 5 dollar 8.5x11 sketchbook. Real crummy but works just fine (though it's falling apart). The little guys are from a 3x5 book. Everything is predominantly ballpoint pen, though you may, on occasion, stumble across a lonely highlighter splotch or some pencil scratches.

This was a fun experiment. I cut out half of a character and moved him to the next page (but in the same spot), so it seems as though he's in two places/compositions at once. Spidey peeks through the hole, of course. Maybe I should give him a speech bubble on this side too...

I had a class in the morning, a meeting during lunch, two more classes and then work from 8 to midnight.

I'll probably go work on homework after work, too.

This is kind of a cop out, but have some pages from my sketchbook recently. Some is from anatomy, some is from doodling in other classes, but critics agree it's all in ballpoint pen. Mu Pan made me feel like an idiot for not using that medium sooner. More to come!

I think the drawing I did first on this page was absolutely perfect, and then I completely ruined it by trying to be progressive and layer my work. Silly Hunter! Being progressive is for good artists!

I don't really feel like any work I've done recently has been any good-- on a personal or professional level (except maybe my comic... but even bits of that bother me). I don't know why I've been in such a shitty mood about my art, but I really need to break out of this slump. Over break I'm redoing all of my illustration assignments. I need to find some sort of balance in personal aesthetic decision making and effective visual communication techniques that allows me to work in a consistent and readable method.

I think what I have the hardest time doing is coming up with 'clever' ideas for editorial work. I never seem to latch on to a solid, driving concept as my peers do. It's possible that I'll just never be cut out for that work, but I still want to be good at it.

You may think I have a certain visual style, but I haven't executed two things the same way this entire semester.
I need to figure things out.

The Economic Crisis

As I see It:

Two full page illustrations separated by numerous articles regarding the economic decline over the past year. I chose to have them be of the same concept, like a diptych, rather than have two relatively unrelated images (I mean, they'd still be about the articles, anyway). So I painted them simultaneously, separated only by the tape sealing their edges. There's basically an inch of the illustration that is removed from the center, since it was over the tape. The pinkness is supposed to be fat cells, but I may have romanticized their structure slightly (majorly). It's more of a graphic, image-linking element, for me (and you?).

Finding reference for this was thoroughly unenjoyable.

They're each approximately 8.5x11 and done with indian ink, charcoal, gesso, gouache, and acrylic (and sandpaper). I've been trying to experiment. Some areas of this I sanded super smooth-- some places I painted with watercolors and gouache on top of acrylics or gesso, which is generally a no-no-- and I finger painted most of it, actually. One of my goals this semester is to update this blog more often and with things other than finished products.
SO-- Here's what my first print for silkscreening is so far-- the sketch and finished drawing. It's only going to be two colors, so I'll fiddle with it in layers of photoshop until I get it right, then print out the layers on separate sheets of acetate as positives for silkscreening. I've never done this before, so we'll see how it goes.

Interpret them as you will-- although most of it is pretty self-explanatory/self-indulgent. I have this crummy 5 dollar sketchbook I'm burning through-- sometimes like 7 pages a day. It's good to not feel like each page needs to be a masterpiece. Soon I'll buy another book for that.

School is going well so far. This semester will probably kick my ass, but it builds character, right? I hope so. I'll try and post more frequently now that I have access to scanners and work on my plate. You, too!

Abyss

Another Illustration assignment. We had to read the script for a film we haven't seen and then choose a specific scene to document sequentially. I chose The Abyss. I can't wait to watch the movie. I drew these with ink on canvas board at 9x12, scanned them and reprinted them 8.5x11 watercolor paper (because laser printer ink is waterproof!), painted them with watercolor and gouache, and then re-scanned them and did some digital editing, like always. Enjoy!

Bladerunner, Again

We had a project in Illustration in which we chose a book to illustrate at least 5 pages for. Some people focused on the structure of their pages, but I chose to just do 5 separate panels (I'm terrible at constructing things). If you line them up though, they compositionally flow and the bullet trails are unhindered by borders. The center image is a more abstract compilation of elements from the book and film, but the others are more specific scenes, the last of which doesn't actually occur. They're all 12" square (1cm thick) wood panels and composed of only gesso and 3 acrylics: black, white, and one color (except the center, which only has black and white).

What have we learned? Hunter is terrible at updating his websites.

I drew a lot of these with a regular ink pen combined with a big brush pen from faber-castell. I prefer them for their indian ink, since it doesn't smell and doesn't bleed through my paper (although I love the aesthetic qualities of accidental bleeding). Even the color marker is indian ink. Pretty sweet. I tested its waterproof-isity (neologisms!) by painting watercolors over it in the very last piece here, probably my favorite. The other paintings are done in gouache-- what else?

This is a group of pieces I've done for drawing on location. It's the only class where I can draw from life extensively and experiment a lot with shifting styles and techniques. Let me know what you think, ok? I actually haven't scanned another 4 or 5 weeks of work where I'm trying some even crazier stuff. Give me time and I'll upload them along with other classwork. Thanks!

Draw-A-Thon '08

Holy rusted metal, Batman! It's the Draw-A-Thon! I barely touched charcoal this time. Decided to experiment a bit. I think it paid off, because I seem to be getting more familiar with brushes. Finally. Most of these are relatively small... At the largest they might be 14x17. Most are probably more around 9x12 or so.

Some Drawings.

These aren't exactly recent-- the four hatch crazy ones are from a month or two (or three?) ago-- when Eric, Jaci (I don't know the spelling, really) and I went up to the Society of Illustrators for some life drawing. The other one is a collage from methods class I liked-- mostly because it was minimal on the collage--haha. I used a nib Pen for it-- and the glue from the news print was still wet, so the ink would occasionally bleed out in what I think is a rather visually appealing way.

3:10 to Yuma

I recently had to do 30 drawings of whatever subject matter I wanted for a homework assignment. After turning those in, I had to do 10 more paintings (not my forte) from some of the drawings. I chose to do some select shots from the film 3:10 to Yuma, which I had recently watched. Anyway, I'll post a few drawings and their respective paintings here. The drawings are 9x12 in India ink with a dip pen. The paintings are 12x16 on canvas with Gouache (a big nono, apparently!).

It was a pretty rough 2 weeks. If you'd like to see the rest of the drawings you can check out my Deviantart, which has a few more-- or you can go here to see every single one.

Sophomore Survey Fall 07

Survey is kind of like... finals here at Art School. Yeah, it's like that. We have to put up at least 3 works from every class in order to placate our instructors and ensure anything other than a failing grade. Unfortunately, us Illustration majors kind of get shafted with the 18x24 and 20x30 pieces, which take up most of the space we're allowed to use! It was a little cramped, but I managed to fit in everything necessary (though not everything I would have liked).

Anyway, my favorite is the Eggsplosion. Gouache and I worked pretty well together, I'd say! There's another piece done in watercolor towards the center of the Panoramic that I really enjoy a lot. It's for a double page spread about 'The October Game,' a short story by Bradbury. I made a few major errors when doing it, but it's still one of my favorites. Teacher didn't like it so much, though.

Also, The Macbeth and Suicidal Lovers pieces got taken for the Society of Illustrator's Student Work competition, which I am rather excited for (even though there's no way I can compare to some others). I'll work on posting more work this semester. You can count on it!

Every image is 580px by 270px and a single layer, created with tools probably more basic even than mspaint. It's helping me get better I think. Boy am I a nerd. I've been moderately obsessed with glowing eyes recently... particularly of the green genre. It's supposedly a blood elf, but it doesn't have big pointy ears... or eyebrows... or.. hell.. arms? I did something different for this though. I just painted right over my lineart, which is something I'm usually terrified to do. The new 'graffiti' application on facebook kind of helped me get over it though... it's pretty good for practicing single-layer simple painting skills, surprisingly.

Our drawing final required us to draw life-size elephants from observation. So... we went to the Natural History Museum in Manhattan to draw some of the Taxidermy. The background of mine I copied from a diorama nearby, since the elephants' surroundings were just the boring old building beams.

It's about 10' high and 7.5' long. This image is a little cropped, I think. That's a stool in the bottom right. Whoops.

For non-believers.

Graaahh!

It was done on brown Kraft paper (18x24 sheets) which I taped together just along the edges. This allows me to fold it up easily and cleanly for transportation or working in more cramped conditions (which I never did). Imagine, if you will, a museum filled with obnoxious children and oblivious parents-- and then imagine an artist diligently scribbling on a massive sheet of paper on the ground. Now... when these scenarios combine... well... There are lots of shoes involved, and it is most unpleasant.

I am, however, very pleased with the final outcome!

Draw-A-Thon

The DRAW-A-THON at Pratt is an extremely momentous occasion consisting of 18 models, hundreds or people (presumably artists), free pizza, coffee, and vitamin water (and soda), and 2 floors of rooms that lasts a full 12 hours (from 7PM to 7AM). This was something like the 20th they've hosted in a row, but it's the first I've ever attended, and boy did I draw.

They have every room devoted to a different time. I paid a visit to the 1 minute area, 5-10 minutes, 20 minutes, and the costume room, which was usually 10-15 minutes. The times are for how long the model will hold a pose, if you're not accustomed to this sort of jargon. Anyway, I steered clear of the one hour, three hour, and all night pose rooms. I can't sit still for that long-- let alone focus on a single work. I find that I work best when I draw something for 10-15 minutes. Beyond that I begin to overwork and doubt my original intentions.

So... I'm just going to post some things I did that I enjoy. They're all on 18x24 newsprint paper and most are noticeably done in charcoal, which I haven't used for several months. There are a couple drawn in a pen, which you should be able to notice.

10 minutes. Off to a good start.

I think this was 10 minutes as well-- but I became absorbed in a discussion with my Drawing Teacher.

5 minutes I think. This is O.K.

Probably another 5 minutes. I like drawing from the back.

Clearly a longer pose. 10 minutes.

10 minutes. I like this one a lot.

5 minutes I think. I like this one a lot as well. I drew onto the other page (visible from the top) because I didn't want to crop her lovely hair.

5 minutes. Ehhh.

10 minutes. Gettin' a little crazy.

20 minutes. See? The overworking is there. My teacher says the back near the shoulder is the most confusing to him.

1 minute. Cropped quite a bit. This is probably more like 4x8 or something.

1 minute. Same idea.

Something between 10 and 15 minutes. Costume room!

I added the halo. This is the same model as some of the upper ones as well. I don't know how long I spent on this.

Around 3 or 4 AM I started experimenting with the free markers lying around.

For fear of going one full month without posting, I'm going to post this post.

I'm still doing lots of work, I just haven't been consistently photographing it. Be assured-- the next post will be a lengthy one.

There's also been a lot of color-aid (construction paper, for you non-art students) work in my LCD class I'd rather not post, since I just don't even consider it as something I enjoy learning. Everything else though... it works for me. When we paint or something... use a media I can grasp, you'll see it. The paper stuff though-- I don't know. I feel like it teaches a lesson about how you envision color, but it also greatly hinders your ability to create something aesthetically pleasing. Yes, it's a good tool. Yes, I hate using it. It smells bad. It cost over a hundred dollars. It gives nasty, nasty, paper cuts.

Drawing's going well. The next assignment is one where we actually get to choose our own subject matter (within certain parameters, of course) and our own materials! So, we'll see how that goes-- and you can most certainly expect me to be doing it in pen, by god!

Also, all of my cartoon-y, conceptual, japanimation influenced garbage I'll probably eventually scan and post on my deviant art, which there should be a link to on the right, there. Yeah, right over-- yeah. When I finally do, you can grasp fully the extent to which I still find time to doodle in copious amounts.

Fauvism and Self-Portraits

We do a lot of self-portraiture here. This is a recent drawing homework assignment. The objective was to accomplish deep-space (ie: putting yourself in long perspective) using shades of white and gray on a middle toned paper. The paper must be 24x24 square pieces, so the final project will be modular. The minimum was two pieces, the max was 4, and you could arrange them however you like. I kind of ducked out of that.

This next work is just a copy of a fauvism piece aptly titled 'Seated Nude,' by Georges Braque. We had the option of either doing a grid where we just organize all the colors used or copying directly, since either would help us understand their wild, beast-like use of colors. Of course I chose to copy it-- Jesus Christ am I sick of grids.

I Forgot These

Remember Optical Mixing? Well, we've come to terms and moved on from that, but I forgot to post another self portrait I did.

I thought using only Rubik's cube colors would be slightly more challenging and a little more interesting. I also added some smaller dots inside some squares for finer things, like my glasses and lips. Oh, and we're never allowed to use white on the page, which is a part of a Rubik's Cube-- so instead I just used a really pale orange (which is a flesh tone).

Pelvic Thrust

In 3-Dimensional Design we're creating a to-scale five-foot-six female skeleton in armature wire. In order to make this project less impossible, we drew from a hat so each of us would only have one or two parts to deal with (IE: hand and forearm, lower leg and foot, etc.). My lot was number seven, the pelvis, whose crumpled paper drew a fierce expletive cry forth from my chest, as it was integral or something to that extent.

Anyway, homework involved doing dimensional drawings of your area. Some were to be more detailed of a smaller part, and others of the whole area, to the scale of a five-foot-six woman. I think mine turned out rather well.

Those of you who know me better, know me to never use pencil. I'll admit on the one page I did some pencil work, but it cut me to my very core, which some might argue to be near one's pelvis. The rest was all done with something akin to a rapidograph pen, with no other materials involved (save the newsprint itself).

For drawing we had to do self portraits in the Rembrandt school of thought. This means making a very ridiculous face. Three drawings were required, as well as 2 paintings of only a light source hitting our faces. Here you go.

Optical Mixing

Sorry for the delay. I thought something was wrong with blogger, but it turns out that since these photos are so large, I can only upload like... 2 at a time.

Here's some recent LCD works based on Optical Mixing (And one that's not so much). Optical Mixing is kind of like pointillism, with only a few things different. Marks aren't supposed to overlap and you're not supposed to mix anything unless it's with white. Examples are Chuck Close (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_close) and this awesome person (http://www.space-invaders.com/rubikubism.html). I overlap a lot.

We're restrained a little bit more, but you get the idea.

Last week's homework assignments for LCD:

We had to create a geometric alphabet and then make three words with it.
If you can't read them, I've failed.
Acyrilics.

This is the mountain of tape I used to paint so cleanly.
I'm not a clean painter.

A fruit and a reflective, colorful soda can was the assignment. Clearly I've deviated somewhat.
This is a peach and some coffee-expresso thing.
I have to redo it with a can.
Oils.

The End of the Beginning

A few works created before my time here:

A fire dancer. Totally made up. Dry-point Etching. Also, probably my favorite project from high school.

A Self-Portrait. Pastels. There's a glass frame, so you can see me and my grandmother in the reflection, probably.

Acrylic Painting. My brother and I as children playing with a goat (before every fiber of our beings clashed).
